Ukraine Echo In Haiti – Shortage of Fuel
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, is being adversely impacted by the war in Ukraine. Center of Hope (Haiti) is among those impacted.
Haiti is trying to stabilize its government and its economy. The uncertainty around the governance of the country has left many areas subject to rule by gangs and corruption. Inflation is rising world-wide. The Haitian Gourde is now worth less than one penny in US dollars. Unemployment remains massive and the country as whole is further impoverished.
The war in Ukraine has caused a world-wide shortage of fuel. In Haiti, it is difficult to find diesel fuel at the pump. Much of the fuel is sold in cans on the street. To make matters worse, the sellers of fuel are diluting the fuel with other additives, including water. Thus, causing significant damage to vehicles and equipment (for example, generators) using such fuel.
COHH Fuel Cost Crisis
Center of Hope (Haiti) uses diesel for its generator and its truck. The generator was the back up to the power grid and our inverter batteries. The power grid has become non-existent and as a consequence we are relying on the generator for electricity at our multi-building school campus. We are now using three times as much diesel and paying three times as much for bona fide diesel. After three months in 2022, our fuel expenses have consumed the fuel budget for the year 2022.
To address the problem of increased fuel prices, we have formed a COHH Fuel Fund on our secure website with the hope that generous donors will help us manage through this crisis. Donations can also be made by texting – “FuelFund” to 44-321.
Center of Hope (Haiti) does not receive funds from local or foreign governments. It relies upon the generosity of individuals, religious organizations and private businesses for its support.
